They all came to me during the same night. I woke around two in the morning with complete clarity and started writing them into my phone so I would not forget them. At that moment I did not fully understand how they were connected. Over time I realized they were all part of the same narrative.Todos llegaron durante la misma noche. Desperté cerca de las dos de la mañana con una claridad completa y empecé a escribirlos en mi teléfono para no olvidarlos. En ese momento no entendía del todo cómo se conectaban. Con el tiempo me di cuenta de que todos eran parte de la misma narrativa.

Because I was involved in creating each home from its very conception, I knew every space intimately: its personality, its design, the feeling it was meant to evoke. It begins with the copal tree, whose wood the artisans of Arrazola and Tilcajete carve into alebrijes. Tradition says these creatures were first born in dreams, where imagination joined animals that never met in life. In Zapotec cosmology the Nahual is the spiritual guardian and the Tonal is the life force, both carried in animal form. And Raíz, root, returns everything to its origin: the roots of the copal, of Zapotec culture, of this family's own story, and of the eight homes that share one universe.Empieza con el árbol de copal, cuya madera tallan los artesanos de Arrazola y Tilcajete para crear alebrijes. La tradición dice que estas criaturas nacieron primero en los sueños, donde la imaginación unió animales que nunca se encontraron en la vida. Y Raíz devuelve todo a su origen: las raíces del copal, de la cultura zapoteca, de la historia de esta familia, y de las ocho casas que comparten un mismo universo.
